A court in Russia recognized that 20 people were killed when Ukraine struck the cruiser Moskva.

The 2nd Western District Military Court, located in Moscow, disclosed information about those killed on the cruiser Moskva, but soon deleted its publication, Mediazona reported on January 22.

The court reported that “from the explosion, fire and smoke [on the cruiser], 20 members of the cruiser’s crew died, twenty-four crew members suffered bodily injuries of varying degrees of severity, and eight people went missing, including during the struggle for the survivability of the ship, which lasted over six hours.”

The court reported this when pronouncing a verdict in absentia in the case of the sinking of the cruiser. The commander of the 406th artillery brigade of the Ukrainian Navy, Andrei Shubin, was sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia. According to the prosecution, it was he who gave the order to launch a missile strike on the cruiser Moskva in April 2022.

• The Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the cruiser Moskva on April 13, 2022. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that there was a fire on board, which caused the detonation of ammunition and subsequent flooding. Ukraine claimed that the cruiser was hit by two Neptune missiles. The cruiser sank on April 14.
• The Russian Ministry of Defense initially reported that one person was killed and 27 sailors were missing. A Meduza source close to the command of the Black Sea Fleet said that 37 people were killed. A court in Sevastopol declared 17 sailors dead in November 2022. The Russian service of the BBC and Mediazona reported in January 2023 that they had identified the names of 22 dead crew members.
• On the second anniversary of the death of the cruiser Moskva, a monument to the deceased crew was unveiled in Sevastopol. It contains the names, surnames, dates of life and ranks of 21 sailors. For 19 of them, the date of death is April 13, 2022.
