In Finland, students from Russia were given suspended sentences after being accused of supplying equipment worth 140 thousand euros in circumvention of sanctions.

In Finland, the district court of the province of Kainuu, bordering Karelia, sentenced three students from Russia who were accused of transporting dual-use equipment in circumvention of sanctions. This was reported by Yle .

Two of them, a man born in 1998 and a girl born in 2005, were sentenced today.

The man was found guilty of gross violation of the sanctions regime and was sentenced to a year of suspended imprisonment. The girl was sentenced to four months' probation for aiding and abetting a crime.

Previously, the third defendant, who admitted guilt and testified against the others, was also sentenced to a year and two months probation.

The students were studying in the city of Kajaani at the Kainuu Vocational College; Finnish police reported an “operation” at the college and its dormitory in the spring of 2024.

According to investigators, in 2022-2024, students purchased equipment in the city of Kajaani and sent it to Russia, which is classified as dual-use goods, for a total of almost 140,000 euros. This includes drones, laptops, smartphones and laser rangefinders.

As Yle notes, the student convicted today was accused of purchasing equipment worth 70,700 euros, and the girl “participated in purchases worth about 10,000 euros.”
