American plastic surgeons said that recently the eyebrow transplant procedure has been gaining popularity among women. It's typically done by women who over-plucked their eyebrows in the 1990s and 2000s and now want fuller brows, The Washington Post reports .
According to the publication, this procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and its cost can reach up to 18 thousand dollars. It is noted that when performed correctly, the results look natural and last a long time, although in some cases correction may be required after a few years. However, according to The Washington Post, transplanted hairs grow much faster than regular eyebrows, so they need to be trimmed weekly.
Page views for eyebrow transplants increased nearly 10-fold from 2022 to 2024, according to RealSelf, a digital platform where consumers search for aesthetic service providers. According to plastic surgeon Jason Champagne, interest in the procedure surged four years ago when celebrities began talking openly about it. For example, model Chrissy Teigen and writer Robin McGraw publicly expressed their delight after transplantation.
Eyebrow transplants became popular in the early 1900s, when doctors took “strips” of hair from a donor site on the scalp and transplanted them onto the eyebrows. Now surgeons replant individual hairs, and after the procedures, patients are not allowed to touch their eyebrows or wash their faces normally for a week.
Depending on the technique used, at least half of the 200 to 375 transplanted hairs will fall out within six weeks, and if the operation is successful, they will begin to grow back after three to four months. According to surgeon Mark Dauer, 70-90% of transplanted hair survives, with some grafts being rejected due to previous scars or concomitant diseases.
