Iran refused to negotiate with the US

The Iranian and US authorities could not agree on the location of the negotiations. Initially, the parties were supposed to meet in Turkish Istanbul on February 6 to discuss the Iranian nuclear program, Axios reports .

A multilateral meeting could be held in Turkey, at which Middle Eastern states would be present as observers. However, Iran proposed moving the negotiations to Oman and holding them alone with the United States, without intermediaries.

“We told the Iranians it was this or nothing, and they said, 'Okay, then nothing,'” a senior U.S. official told Axios.

However, according to the publication, Washington still wants to improve relations with Iran through diplomacy. A US official said the White House is ready to hold the meeting soon if Iran agrees to return to the original format.

“We want to quickly reach a real agreement, otherwise people will start looking at other options,” the American official said.

The publication adds that in addition to the nuclear program, Iran and the United States, with the assistance of Middle Eastern states, were supposed to discuss the Iranian missile program and the violation of human rights violations during the brutal suppression of protesters. Now negotiations may not take place at all.
