The former head of the Kamchatka colony was sentenced to five years in prison for “transferring power to the leaders of the AUE movement”

A court in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky sentenced the former head of men's correctional colony No. 5, Ivan Sorokin, to five years in prison, finding him guilty of exceeding his official powers out of personal interests. Mediazona drew attention to this.

As follows from the data published on the court’s website, the verdict was announced today, February 9.

Sorokin led the colony from January 2022 to October 2024. According to the prosecution, he “did not oppose” members of the banned non-existent AUE movement and “transferred unspoken power over the rest of the convicts to its leaders.”

“The defendant not only did not stop the actions of the organizers and other participants of the banned movement, but also ensured its stable functioning, supported the existence of an illegal hierarchy based on “thieves’ traditions” and rules, and deliberately concealed the fact of the functioning of the banned international public association “AUE.” In addition, the convicts were provided with a special regime and were given household privileges to create comfortable conditions for serving their sentences,” the court said .

The prosecutor's office claims that Sorokin did this for the sake of “formal well-being, imaginary stability in the institution, absence of complaints from superiors and personal career advancement.” The defendant did not admit his guilt.
