The slowdown of Telegram has significantly reduced the speed of its work in Russia

The speed of Telegram in Russia has decreased several times after the restrictions established by Roskomnadzor, Vorstka discovered.

The analysis was carried out using a method published by the head of the Internet Defense Society, Mikhail Klimarev. The speed was measured using a command that downloads the Telegram installation file from the messenger website.

As Klimarev reported, to confirm the absence of slowdown, the speed after downloading a file should be approximately ten times less than the provider’s speed. He was able to obtain such values ​​abroad when the application loaded in 6 seconds.

At the same time, “Vorstka”, having conducted several tests from different devices in Russia, found out that in the country the download speed of the messenger is several times less than necessary.

So, from one device, with a norm of over 8 megabytes, the terminal showed only 83 thousand bytes, from another device - 27 thousand bytes, from a third - 50 thousand. Loading the messenger also took a long time: 20, 30 and 25 minutes, respectively.

Klimarev, in a conversation with Vorstka, confirmed that the data shows a slowdown in the service many times over. At the same time, he noted that the degree of influence of this process on the operation of the messenger depends on the provider and region:

“Please note that there are no “slowdowns” in Russian legislation. This is essentially the arbitrariness of the RKN,” added the head of the Internet Defense Society.

On February 10, RBC, citing sources, reported that Roskomnadzor officially began to slow down the work of the messenger in Russia. The department said that they will continue to impose restrictions on the platform, since it does not comply with Russian legislation.

At the same time, restrictions on the work of Telegram began to be introduced in the summer: they affected calls, registration in the application, and downloading media files.

Sources from Vorstka reported that, despite the introduction of restrictions, there are no plans to completely block Telegram in Russia. However, it is not ruled out before the end of the year.
