Translator of Italian poetry Evgeniy Solonovich has died
Translator of Italian poetry Evgeny Solonovich died at the age of 92.
“On February 11, 2026, Evgeniy Mikhailovich Solonovich, who trained more than one generation of translators from Italian at the Literary Institute, who gave Russian literature the best lines of Italian poetry, passed away. We mourn together with our family, friends and students,” says the website of the A. M. Gorky Literary Institute.
Evgeniy Solonovich was born on February 21, 1933 in Simferopol. Graduated from the translation department of the 1st Moscow Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (now Moscow State Linguistic University).
Solonovich made his debut in print in 1959 with translations from Italian in the anthology “Poets of Dalmatia of the Renaissance of the 15th–16th centuries.” His translations included Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca, Ludovico Ariosto, Giuseppe Gioachino Belli, Giosue Carducci, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Salvatore Quasimodo, Eugenio Montale, Andrea Zandzotto and other Italian poets of different eras.
From 1993 to 2018 he taught at the A. M. Gorky Literary Institute.
