Kazakhstan satisfied the Russian Federation's request to extradite Yulia Emelyanova
The Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan has granted Russia's request to extradite Yulia Emelyanova, an activist and former employee of Navalny's St. Petersburg headquarters. This was reported by the Anti-War Committee of Russia and the human rights project Kovcheg .
The resolution to satisfy the appeal of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation was handed to her on January 29. On February 10, she reported this to her lawyer Iskander Alimbaev, who was not notified by the supervisory authority of its decision. According to Alimbayev, the resolution was issued with a procedural violation - the consideration of Yulia Emelyanova’s application for asylum in Kazakhstan has not yet been completed.
Back in October 2025, as noted by the Anti-War Committee of Russia, the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan guaranteed that the issue of extradition would not be considered until all administrative procedures related to obtaining asylum were completed.
The defense intends to appeal the decision of the prosecutor's office to the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan.
The Anti-War Committee of Russia believes that the risk of Yulia Emelyanova’s deportation to Russia is extremely high. “Kazakhstan has become a categorically unsafe country for Russians. This is at least the fourth episode in which people are extradited in an accelerated manner, bypassing procedural norms and depriving them of the right to defense,” notes Margarita Kuchusheva, a lawyer for the “Consuls of the Anti-War Committee” project.
- Yulia Emelyanova is an activist of the Emigration for Action and Just Help projects. She was detained on August 31, 2025 at Almaty airport while flying in transit to another country. Russian authorities put Emelyanova on the wanted list for theft: she allegedly stole a mobile phone from a taxi driver.
- The activist denies guilt, human rights activists say that the case has signs of fabrication. Emelyanova claimed that during interrogations in this case she was subjected to torture. In July 2022, the case went to trial, but Emelyanova had left Russia by that time. Now she is in a pre-trial detention center in Almaty under extradition arrest.
