The ex-governor of the Kursk region was registered in a pre-trial detention center as “suicidal.” His lawyer spoke about death threats from an “unspecified circle of people”

Alexey Smirnov, the former governor of the Kursk region, who was arrested on charges of accepting bribes, is registered as prone to suicide and self-harm. The prosecutor stated this during a meeting of the Leninsky Court of Kursk.

According to the prosecution, Smirnov is characterized by the management of the pre-trial detention center “negatively” and does not respond to “educational activities.” The ex-governor himself does not agree with his “inclination”. Smirnov’s lawyer said that his client received death threats from “an unspecified circle of people.”

The court left Smirnov under arrest for another three months, until May 5. The former official's defense asked to be transferred to house arrest. At the same time, the court granted the defense’s request to transfer Smirnov’s case to another judicial body: he will be sent to the judicial panel for criminal cases of the First Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction.

• Smirnov was governor of the Kursk region in May-December 2024. He was detained in April in connection with a scam involving low-quality “dragon teeth” along the border with Ukraine. According to investigators, Smirnov received bribes totaling about 30 million rubles from businessmen. He admitted guilt.
