Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on an article by The Economist magazine, which stated that Russia promises the US deals worth $12 trillion in profits in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. The publication called this amount “unrealistic.”
“We remain interested in resuming trade, economic and investment cooperation with the United States. It can be truly mutually beneficial,” Peskov told RBC.
The Economist, published on the same day, said that in exchange for lifting sanctions, Russian negotiators offer the United States the acquisition of shares in Russian energy projects, the creation of a data center on nuclear energy, the construction of a tunnel under the Bering Strait, as well as deals for the extraction of rare earth metals and oil and gas in the Arctic.
Previously, the Kremlin actually stated that they were offering cooperation to American companies and were interested in joint projects with the United States for the extraction of rare earth metals. However, as the magazine noted, the amount of profit reported by the Russian side is clearly greatly overestimated.
In October 2025, Putin’s special representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, Kirill Dmitriev, published a post on the social network X, in which he proposed building a tunnel under the Bering Strait between the Russian Far East and American Alaska.
“Imagine that the Putin-Trump tunnel connects Russia and the United States. <…> Let's build the future together!” — Dmitriev wrote in the message. At the same time, the author noted in the post the owner of the social network, American billionaire Elon Musk.
