Media: ex-Prime Minister of Norway tried to commit suicide due to references in the Epstein case

Former Prime Minister of Norway and ex-Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland was hospitalized after a suicide attempt. The politician allegedly took such a step because of references to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein in the case, iNyheter reports .

Norwegian police have charged Jagland with corruption. The investigation believes that the politician, holding high government positions, used connections with the American financier Epstein for personal gain. On February 12, 2026, security forces conducted large-scale searches of Jagland’s property.

The day before the searches, the Norwegian Office for the Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime (Okokrim) sent a letter to the Council of Europe asking that Jagland be stripped of his political immunity. The Council of Europe agreed with a similar step.

The Okokrim letter, as noted by the publication, indicated that Jagland and his immediate family repeatedly used Epstein’s private apartments in Paris and New York between 2011 and 2018. They also allegedly stayed at Epstein's Palm Beach villa in Florida. In addition, Epstein likely paid travel expenses for six adults associated with Jagland in connection with their travels.

At the moment, according to a source with whom iNyheter spoke, Jagland is in one of the Norwegian hospitals. His condition is assessed as serious.

According to documents published by the US Department of Justice, a month before US President Bill Clinton had a personal meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in 2018, Epstein tried to contact Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. To this end, he wrote an email to the then head of the Council of Europe, Thorbjörn Jagland.

Jagland responded by saying that he would meet with Lavrov’s assistant the next day and invite him to contact Epstein. It is unknown whether this meeting took place, since there is no mention of it in the correspondence, Politico notes.
