Louvre director resigns after historic robbery

Laurence de Car has served as director of the Louvre since 2021. However, after the main museum in France was robbed in the fall of 2025, she decided to resign from her position. French President Emmanuel Macron accepted his resignation, the press service of the Elysee Palace reports .

“The head of state accepted it, noting this step as a manifestation of responsibility at a time when the largest museum in the world needs detente and a new strong impulse in order to successfully implement modern projects to ensure security and modernization,” the official statement says.

Macron also thanked Laurence de Car for her unquestionable scientific expertise and commitment in recent years. He noted that the former director of the Louvre may receive a mission within the framework of the French presidency of the G7 on cooperation between the largest museums of the respective countries.

On the morning of October 19, 2025, the historic robbery of the Louvre took place . Four men used elevator equipment to reach the windows and cut through them. Then the attackers broke into Apollo's gallery.

They stole eight items from Napoleon's jewelry collection. 8,482 diamonds, 35 emeralds, 34 sapphires and 212 pearls were stolen. The value of the stolen objects of historical and cultural heritage is estimated at 88 million euros.

The robbers also tried to steal the ninth relic - the crown of Empress Eugenie. However, they were unable to take her with them due to the rush. The crown was found lying on the ground near the crime scene and crushed: during the robbery, thieves stepped on it. The Louvre showed the empress's crown for the first time since the attack and said experts would be able to restore the historical relic.
