US President Donald Trump announced the creation of a new military coalition to “eradicate the cartels” in the Western Hemisphere. According to him, 17 countries have already joined the alliance.
The statement was made during the Shield of the Americas summit, which Trump is holding in Miami on March 7 with the leaders of several Latin American countries - Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, El Salvador, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru and other countries. The meeting is attended primarily by pro-American governments in the region.
Pentagon representatives announced the United States' readiness to go on the offensive against Latin American drug cartels even without the support of partners. The expansion of the US military presence and special operations in the region is seen as part of Washington's new influence architecture.
In addition, Trump said that Cuba wants to conclude an agreement with Washington and is already negotiating with it and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
