Moldova has begun the procedure for its final exit from the CIS. The Kremlin called this decision expected

The Government of Moldova approved the withdrawal from the basic documents of the CIS - the Agreement on the Creation of the Commonwealth, its Charter and the Alma-Ata Declaration, writes Telegraph.md.

The publication adds that the draft law has already been sent to President Maia Sandu for consideration.

Back in January 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi said that Chisinau was launching the withdrawal process: the country actually no longer participates in the work of the CIS, and legal registration will be completed in 12 months.

On March 11, press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that Moldova’s participation in the CIS has been frozen for a long time, so it was expected that “sooner or later this frozen state will be formalized.”

• Moldova has been part of the Commonwealth of Independent States since its formation in December 1991. Then the agreement on the creation of the CIS was signed by 11 former Soviet states.

• In March 2022, Chisinau applied to join the EU. Negotiations on European integration officially began in July 2024.
