Moldova approved withdrawal from the CIS

The Parliament of Moldova voted to denounce key agreements with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which will allow the country to leave the organization.

60 out of 101 deputies voted for the adoption of the relevant laws, Interfax writes. Deputies from the Party of Communists and the Party of Socialists opposed it. They believe that Moldova’s exit from the CIS “will have catastrophic consequences” for the country’s economy.

In the future, the adopted laws must be signed by the President of Moldova. Then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send all documents to the CIS Executive Committee. The country will finally leave the organization 12 months later.

• The Moldovan authorities first announced that they planned to leave the CIS in December 2023 after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moldova’s participation in the CIS “does not have much value”: “Let them do as they want.”
• In past years, Georgia (in 2008) and Ukraine (in 2018) left the CIS.
