Roskomnadzor added the “Traffic Light VPNs” project, launched by blogger and politician Maxim Katz, to the register of prohibited sites. The decision to do this was made on April 6, the service began to be blocked on April 9, as follows from the materials of the blockedin.org project.

Katz launched a project to test the functionality of VPNs in Russia on March 18. The creator of the service said that this is a non-profit project, the functionality of the VPN is checked by “volunteers in Moscow without special technical skills”: “They just turn it on and see if it works.”

Russian authorities have stepped up their fight against VPN services in recent weeks. Thus, the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation asked telecom operators to charge customers for traffic when using a VPN, and also demanded that the largest Internet platforms limit access to their platforms to users with VPN enabled by April 15.
The fight against VPNs has intensified amid the blocking of Russia’s two largest instant messengers – Telegram and WhatsApp.
