Writer Evgenia Nekrasova received the O. Henry Literary Award. Past laureates include King and Faulkner

Russian writer Evgenia Nekrasova won the O. Henry Prize for best story. She was recognized for her work “She-Bear” in 2023, according to the award’s website.

Nekrasova is known for her works in the tradition of magical realism based on folklore, writes Kommersant. One of her iconic works is the 2018 novel “Kalechina-Malechina,” which became a finalist for the National Bestseller, Big Book, and NOS awards.

Among her other works is the prose cycle “To the Sisters. About those who will suffer" (2019), the collection "House Love" (2021) and the novel "Skin" (2022).

• The O. Henry Prize was established in 1918 in honor of the American writer known for short prose. Until 2011, only authors from the USA and Canada could apply for the award, but now there are no such restrictions.
• Past laureates include Stephen King, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, and John Updike. In 2022, Vladimir Sorokin received the prize for his story “Horse Soup.”
