In Washington, before the visit of King Charles III, Australian flags were mistakenly hung instead of British ones.

Authorities in the District of Columbia mistakenly hung several Australian flags instead of British ones near the White House ahead of King Charles III's visit to the United States, Reuters writes.

According to the agency, among more than 230 British flags there were 15 Australian ones. The mistake was quickly noticed and the flags were replaced, a county Department of Transportation spokesman said.

Reuters notes that Charles III is technically the king of Australia, but the role is largely ceremonial.

Charles III's visit, which begins April 27, marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence from British rule. The purpose of the king's trip, his first to the United States, will be to strengthen the "special relationship" between the countries, which is at its lowest point in 70 years due to tensions over the war with Iran.
