Viktor Orban has abandoned his parliamentary mandate. He will not go to the new parliament

Outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who lost the election, said he was returning the parliamentary mandate he received as leader of the Fidesz party and would not take a seat in the new parliament.

“The mandate that I received as leader of the list is actually my parliamentary mandate from the Fidesz party, so I decided to return it. Now I am needed not in parliament, but in the reorganization of the national camp,” Orban said in a video message published on Facebook.

According to Orban, discussions within the Fidesz leadership are now “in full swing” about updating the faction,” which will be formed on April 27, and its leader will be Gergely Gulyas.

Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi writes that, according to his information, Orban plans to travel to the United States this summer, where his daughter and son-in-law live, and may remain there for a long time in search of “asylum from prosecution.”

Orban, who had been in power for 16 years, admitted the defeat of his party that same evening and congratulated his rival Peter Magyar on his victory - he will now become prime minister.
