The US Treasury will not extend relief for oil from Russia
Washington has no plans to renew permission to buy Russian oil already loaded on ships and at sea. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this in an interview with The Associated Press. He also clarified that similar relaxations will not be extended for oil from Iran.
According to Bessent, the previous exemptions from the sanctions regime were a temporary measure introduced at the request of the 10 most vulnerable and poorest countries amid a sharp rise in oil prices due to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US temporarily eased sanctions in March. Then it was allowed to purchase Russian oil loaded into tankers before March 12 for 30 days. Similar measures then applied to Iranian oil.
The original license was valid until April 11 and the US Treasury said it would not renew it. But on April 18, the department issued a new license, extending the exemptions to oil loaded before April 17.
Bessent estimated Russia's additional income from these measures at approximately two billion dollars.
