Washington and Tehran announced progress in negotiations
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that “some progress has been made” in negotiations between Washington and Tehran and news of a possible agreement could appear in the coming days.
“There is a possibility that today, tomorrow, maybe in a couple of days we will have something to say, but this issue needs to be resolved one way or another,” Rubio told reporters. His words are quoted by Axios journalist Barak Ravid.
According to the head of the State Department, the United States insists that Iran not obtain nuclear weapons, transfer enriched uranium and not impose fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio stressed that US President Donald Trump prefers a diplomatic settlement.
Tehran also announced a rapprochement of positions. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said that the parties are in the final stages of preparing a 14-point memorandum of understanding.
“After several weeks of negotiations between the two sides, we can say that the trend is towards a convergence of positions,” Bagai said.
According to him, the document concerns ending the war, stopping the American naval blockade and unlocking frozen Iranian assets. After agreeing on the memorandum, the parties intend to discuss the details of the final agreement within 30–60 days.
Al-Arabiya TV channel, citing diplomatic sources, reported that Iran, through a Pakistani mediator, offered to open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for compensation from the United States. Tehran also allegedly agreed to temporarily abolish fees for the passage of ships.
In addition, according to the TV channel, Iran is ready to limit uranium enrichment to 3.6% for ten years and dilute uranium enriched above 20% on its territory.
Iran is now capable of enriching uranium up to 60%. To create a nuclear weapon, a level of about 90% is required.
