YouTube restricts viewing of some videos via VPN

Users report warnings requiring them to disable block bypass services

YouTube users in Russia have begun to report problems with watching some videos when VPN is turned on. Instead of the video, the platform displays a warning asking you to disable your VPN or proxy service so YouTube can offer “most relevant content.” In some cases, new videos on certain channels are not displayed at all. YouTube restrictions affect content with regional rights

According to Kommersant, the restrictions apply primarily to content, the rights to which are sold separately for different countries. We are talking about official broadcasts of Formula 1, the Olympic Games, television premieres and other materials with strict licensing restrictions.

The publication’s interlocutors on the media market note that the problem is not associated exclusively with Russia. Similar restrictions affect users in other countries, as they are aimed at complying with international licensing agreements.

Experts explain that when using a VPN, the user actually gains access to the Internet from another jurisdiction. As a result, he can watch content for which the rights to display in his country belong to another broadcaster or were not acquired at all.

YouTube tightens enforcement of geo-restrictions

According to experts, YouTube is gradually tightening control over compliance with territorial licenses. This is especially true for sports broadcasts, music events and other expensive exclusive content, the rights to which are sold separately for different markets.

The company has previously taken similar action against YouTube Premium users who subscribed through countries with lower prices using a VPN. In such cases, the service warned about possible cancellation of the subscription.

According to experts, YouTube is not interested in mass blocking of users with VPNs , however, targeted restrictions for certain categories of content will expand, the publication says.

How the verification system works

Experts interviewed by Kommersant note that restrictions are not introduced across countries as a whole, but in relation to specific videos and licenses. Therefore, one user can watch a video without problems, while another may receive a warning or access denial.

When determining location, YouTube uses several parameters at once, including IP address, account country, geolocation history, payment information and signs of VPN use.

According to experts, international platforms are gradually unifying approaches to protecting regional rights and strengthening control over viewing content outside licensed territories. For Russian users, this means that some sports broadcasts and other licensed content will increasingly be unavailable when using a VPN, Kommersant notes.
