Bloomberg: Europeans want to convince Trump to change approach to negotiations

Leaders of leading European countries at the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit in France intend to try to convince US President Donald Trump to agree to a new approach to negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine. Bloomberg writes about this, citing sources.

Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz and Keir Starmer, as stated in the article, believe that the initiative in the war has now passed to Ukraine, and this opens a window of opportunity for negotiations with Russia on terms more favorable to Ukraine than before. In particular, as the publication says, the Europeans want to achieve Trump’s agreement to go beyond the terms discussed at the summit of the US and Russian presidents in Alaska last year. Russian authorities refer to the agreements reached in Anchorage, demanding in particular that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the Donetsk region. The United States has never publicly called on Ukraine to do this, but President Trump has repeatedly said that both sides must compromise to end the war.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted Ukraine’s successes at the front and stated that peace negotiations were in fact not underway at the moment, but noted that the United States was ready to return to the role of mediator if the conditions for this were present.

At a recent meeting in London, the leaders of Britain, Germany and France, together with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, formulated their terms for negotiations. They want Russia to agree to an immediate ceasefire with the current front line as a “starting point for negotiations,” as well as security guarantees for Ukraine, including the deployment of a multinational force. Previously, Moscow refused these demands.

The leaders of the so-called Eurotroika, the publication says, believe that against the backdrop of a shift in US focus to the Middle East, there is a chance that Trump will support their proposals to increase pressure on Russia so that it agrees to negotiations with the participation of representatives of Europe, the United States, Ukraine and Russia.

The G7 summit with Donald Trump will take place next week in France. Vladimir Zelensky was also invited to it.

Ambassadors in Moscow of the countries mentioned in the Bloomberg article - France, Great Britain and Germany - arrived on June 11 for a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Mikhail Galuzin. Earlier, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, said that the ambassadors themselves requested such a meeting. As the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following its results, Mikhail Galuzin explained to the ambassadors of Britain, France and Germany “the principled approaches of the Russian side to finding a resolution to the conflict,” while criticism was expressed towards European countries for supporting Ukraine.
