We are taught that Russia is one. But we personally know at least four. The Russians are now 3, 6, 17 and 19 years old. They love to draw, listen to rap, watch cartoons and dance. They have different parents and different places of residence, and the name, to put it mildly, attracts the attention of compatriots and foreigners. “Such things” went to visit the Russians with a vague but ambitious goal - to find out how their fate is shaping up, and to ask a couple of questions about their future, just in case

In winter it can be minus 50, and in summer there are endless days. There are no trains or roads leading here. You can only get there by helicopter (almost an hour from Salekhard) or by boat (six hours along the Ob). This is Yar-Sale, a village beyond the Arctic Circle. Almost the edge of the country. Russia was born here in 2008.

Brown, slightly slanted eyes, long dark hair, an embarrassed smile, short stature. Russia looks at the branches of a tree. She put them in a vase with water so that the leaves would bloom and at home, while it was minus 30 outside, it was already spring.

Rosya does not remember himself until he was four years old. The first memories are these: “We were returning home from kindergarten. Mom opens the door - and I shout: “Mom, look, there’s a cat!” Mom: “This is not a cat.” And I’m little, I say: “Let’s leave it.” Mom: “Which one we’ll leave!” It was a black muskrat."

Russia Fedorovna lives in a small two-room apartment. In the first room, where the Russian alphabet hangs on the wall and there are two beds, she and her sister Marta fit. Russia has two more sisters - they are twins, they go to kindergarten and learn to read. The second room is for mother Alexandra Serotetto and her fifth daughter, who was born a few months ago. They were provided with housing from Alexandra’s work - she is a nurse at a local hospital.

Russia's mother came to the village many years ago. She did not know Russian - only Nenets. When Alexandra Serotetto remembers her time at school, her face becomes tense: “We had a teacher who hit everyone with pointers. And one day I broke all the pointers in her office. In the boarding school, they used to beat you too - they would push you, and you would stand there and watch. But I had another teacher, she supported me very much. Once we went out for a walk, she asked: “What do you want to become?” I say: “I want to be just a person, so that no one beats me.” After these words, she simply began to cry. We got to the boarding school, went into the classroom, and she kept crying.”

At the age of 17, Alexandra Serotetto became pregnant. And everyone turned away from her: the child’s father, relatives, acquaintances and friends. When her daughter was born, Alexandra decided to name her Yamale, but then she realized that the most suitable name was Russia. She decided that in this way, symbolically, she could make the child part of society.

Alexandra did not return to the tundra so that her daughter would not end up in a boarding school, but there was no housing. At first she spent the night with friends, and then spent the whole day wandering the streets of Yar-Sale with a stroller in which Russia lay. And then she composed a song that she doesn’t sing to anyone.

“It’s about my life, why I chose my child. It doesn’t matter to me whether I have a husband, a man. I can handle it myself, educate, make a person.”

Russia, as the eldest, helps mother with children. In the morning he gets them ready for kindergarten and then goes to school. This year Russia Fedorovna is taking the Unified State Exam. He doesn’t even tell his mother where he wants to go. But a few years ago Rosya had a dream of becoming a musician.

“I was little, watching TV. There was such a beautiful tall woman performing there in a blue dress with a violin. I told my mother that I also wanted to play an instrument on stage. Mom tells me: “Get ready.” She took her hand - “Faster, faster!” All the way I asked: “Where are we running?” And mom: “Now you’ll find out.”

This is how Russia ended up in a music school. There were no more places for the violin, and the girl was signed up for domra. Russia attended classes and performed in competitions. In the eighth grade, she decided that she would go to Salekhard to enter school, but just at that time the musical direction there was closed. Now Russia's domra lies in the closet, and she rarely takes it out. The dream of music grew further. To go to a city on the mainland, you need a lot of money.

For most local residents, the world is a harsh tundra with its own rules. But Russia is not sure about this. In the schoolyard where she studies, there is a large globe. And the world there is completely different.

“I’ve only been to two cities so far, except Salekhard. Many years ago, my mother and I went to Yeysk, to the sea. When we boarded the train, the conductor looked at the documents for a long time: he could not believe that he was taking Russia. I was also in Veliky Ustyug - I performed at a competition. You go on stage and they announce: “Russia.” And immediately there was a noise in the hall: “How is Russia? Why? Is this a joke?” Then they came up to me and asked to show me my diploma. They didn't believe that was their name. And when I studied from fifth to ninth grade, there was a little bit of bullying in my direction. Because I was somehow different from others. “Why were you named Russia, and not America or Ukraine?”

Russia hardly talks about politics. She just wants prices to be lower and wages to be higher. And so that people think about the environment, so that there are waste processing plants, so that everyone understands why it is important to sort garbage. “And one more thing... The war won’t go on forever, right?” - she says, looking out the school window.

Russia's mother and younger sisters are waiting for her at home after school. There is tea and condensed milk on the table. Russia's mother says that she still has a second song - she can sing it. Alexandra looks to the side and sings quietly in Nenets, then translates: “I sing about the fact that my brother lassoed the reindeer and tied it into a harness. And now these are my deer. They are not very fast, a little slow. Just like me. But in a blizzard and blizzard they can bring you back home. They know the way home."

Russia Sergeevna

19 years old, Kirov

She was born on Gorbachev Street in the city of Kirov. Her father, Sergei Perminov, a policeman, and her mother, a doctor of the epidemiological service, then lived in a communal apartment - a shared kitchen and toilet, only cold water. Nine square meters for them with a newborn, a cat and a dog. They spent five years like this. Then they took out a mortgage and moved to a one-room apartment on Lenin Street, and when the old wooden house was demolished, they began to live on Truda Street - in their own three-room apartment.

Dad Sergei was waiting for his son. And he even came up with a name in advance - Fedor. And one day, when he realized that a daughter might still be born, he asked his wife: “What should we call it then?” And Elena suddenly suggested - Russia.

“What was that? At that time, I didn’t associate the word “Russia” with the country at all,” Elena recalls. — I still associate it with the word “dew” - purity. I can't explain where it came from. When we went [to the program] to Malakhov, there was a professor there who deals with names. He said that such a sudden fact could be a sign of something important.”

Sergei did not fully believe that they would give such a name to the girl. And then I decided: so be it.

“Colleagues were surprised then, of course. Some were against it, some were for it, and some said that we did this on purpose to get an apartment.”

Russia Perminova is one of the most media-heavy Russian girls. As soon as she was given a birth certificate, crowds of journalists poured into Kirov: federal, local and even foreign media. They talked about the girl's baptism, about life in a wooden house, about her first words and steps. The Perminovs still keep clippings from those newspapers and magazines. The family was invited to participate in the show, they even dedicated poems to the girl:

You, Rosinka-Russia, your mother carried you,

And love was reflected in your blue eyes. <…>

The whole world showed the rebirth of our peaceful power.

and so on.

Russia Sergeevna herself doesn’t even remember how journalists came and filmed her for the news. He does not feel any secret connection with his homeland. And he perceives his name as ordinary.

- Well, it just happened that that’s my name. Sometimes it gets a little annoying. At competitions, friends sometimes shout: “Russia! Russia!" I threatened a couple of times that I would soon change my name at this rate.

- Did you really want this?

- If you're really serious - never. Well, sometimes I thought: what else could you call me, but I couldn’t come up with it.

Friends of Russia have long been accustomed to her name. But foreigners react expressively.

“I remember when my mother and I flew to Turkey last year, I approached the border guard with my passport - and he looked at me with big eyes. And in English: “Really? Really?” I say: “Well, yes.” And he: “Oh my God.”

In 2025, Russia is planning to enroll in higher education. There was a lot of debate in the family about this. The girl herself thought of becoming a doctor, but then, listening to the stories of her student friends from Kirov Medical Center, she realized that the work was “very hard and thankless: it’s difficult to study, you have to work at midnight for meager salaries.” Mom suggested that her daughter enter the Military Academy, especially emphasizing that until the age of 45, the army would provide water, food, clothing and even provide an apartment. "You'll be like dad." But Russia only winced. Eventually she entered the Kazan Technological University to study chemical technology.

In general, Russia Sergeevna is a serious girl. Blue eyes, dark long hair, oversized clothes and a cap. She smiles as she pets her two beloved dogs: Fifa and Klepa, both adopted from the shelter.

Since the age of three, Russia has been dancing, especially K-pop, and loves music. Listens to Billie Eilish and American rap.

“Of the Russian performers, lyrical ones are closer to me,” notes Russia. — In my playlists I have “Ellie in the Poppy Field” and polnalyubvi.

Honesty is very important to me,” says Russia. - To yourself, to others - it’s all the same. More empathy. I know people who don't sympathize at all. And for me this is basic. Honesty, empathy, kindness. And family and friends."

Three years ago, in front of the maternity hospital in the city of Noyabrsk, a man and a little boy unfurled a large poster. It said: “Thank you for Russia!” Alexander Nakhrachev and his son Kolya came to meet Lyudmila, their wife and mother, who gave birth to a daughter. Both found out the girl's name at the very last moment. For all nine months, Lyudmila kept her name a secret.

“I decided to study the name issue,” she says. — What if there is some kind of law on this topic, what if you can’t call it that? And now it’s Russia Day. And I came across the news that we have a girl in Yamal whose name is the same as her country - Russia Serotetto. Already an adult. So it’s possible.”

When, after giving birth, her husband called Lyudmila and asked about her name, she directly said: “Russia.” Alexander was silent, then asked again and hung up. A few minutes later he called again: “How do you spell it? Right with two “s”?”

Lyudmila decided to name her daughter Russia for patriotic reasons: “As soon as the Great Patriotic War began, everyone began to be ashamed of their country, and then I actually thought: “If only twins were born.” Then I would name the boy Vladimir, in honor of the president, and the girl Russia, in honor of the Motherland.”

Journalists and bloggers quickly learned about the girl with a big name. Comments poured in on the Internet.

“To be honest, I didn’t expect that a wave of such negativity would pass,” admits Lyudmila. - What didn’t they write! That the child’s life was ruined, that his son should have been named Yamalo-Nenetsky, that “why not Perestroika?” But someone directly said: “It’s a pity, we didn’t think of calling it that ourselves.”

Her husband Alexander grew up in a Khanty family on the banks of the Ob River in a small village - accessible only by snowmobile, boat or helicopter. Already as a child, he knew how to fish and hunt, helped carry water from the river, and cook stroganina. Now he works for an oil and gas company and runs the Association of Indigenous Minorities of the North. «Она у нас пацанка. Это Колино влияние, — считает Людмила. — Он игрушку себе выберет, а потом для Роси. Девочки играют в кукол, а моя — в машинки и роботов. Где-то побегать, покувыркаться, показать трюки, зуб себе выбить — это вот наша тема».

Декабрь 2019 года. Morning. Twilight. В питерской квартире спит маленькая девочка. В других комнатах переполох: ее родители, старший брат и другие родственники готовятся к крещению России. России Михайловны. Имя для девочки придумал ее папа Михаил, когда они с ее мамой Валентиной еще даже не были женаты.

« Он говорит как-то: “Давай, если у нас дочка родится, Россией назовем?” Я: “Ну прикольно, Россия Русских”. Думала, разговоры только, шутит. Даже значения не придала», — вспоминает Валентина.

Имя для своей дочки придумал папа, Михаил Русских. Когда через несколько лет она забеременела и УЗИ показало девочку, Михаил напомнил о своей идее. Тут уж Валентина засомневалась: спросила, почему именно так. Михаил объяснил: это не из-за слепой любви к родине, это возможность дать серьезное имя под стать фамилии и взять на себя ответственность воспитать настоящего человека. В итоге мама девочки согласилась. А вот родственники отреагировали по-разному.

«Поначалу, конечно, такое было: “Вы что? Ее из страны не выпустят с таким именем и вообще за границу не пустят. Что это за имя? Мы больше за исконно русские имена”. Это больше бабушки и дедушки, — рассказывает мама Роси. — А сестры мои и мужа нас поддержали: “Хоть горшком назовите, мы будем ее любить, мы примем ее с любым именем”».

Когда Россия была младше и слышала новости по телевизору, то всегда задавала один и тот же вопрос: «А почему про меня рассказывают?» Сейчас она любит смотреть мультики и клипы, под которые можно танцевать, повторяет все — от балета до хип-хопа. Ей нравится рисовать, носить платья и делать макияж. В ее комнате на столе стоит целый бокс с детской косметикой. Россия берет помаду, смотрит в зеркало и вдумчиво красит губы. Потом с улыбкой спрашивает у зеркала: «Ну что, я красивая?»

Россия красивая: русые длинные волосы, карие глаза с чуть зеленоватым оттенком и улыбка — она часто смеется.

— Рося, как люди реагируют на твое имя?

— Иногда не верят.

— Обидно, когда не верят?

— Да, я расстраивалась.

— Что ты хочешь делать, когда вырастешь?

— Быть фигуристкой. Книжки читать. Чаю пить. Болтать. Run. Делать свободу! — и Россия громко смеется.

«Есть прям девочки-пацанки, а она вот прям вот девочка-девочка, — говорит ее мама Валентина. — И очень эмоциональная. Вот недавно было 9 Мая, она слушала стихи про блокадный Ленинград и заплакала. Я говорю: “Ты чего плачешь?” Она: “Мне их так жалко”. В ней столько помещается разных эмоций! Она действительно какая-то полномасштабная, реально соответствует своему имени. Когда папа Роси удивляется, я ему говорю: “Ну а ты как хотел? Назвал ребенка так, теперь вот и получай”».
