Media: US and Iran are closer to an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran are close to signing an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by Bloomberg and CBS News with reference to senior officials and representatives of the G7 countries.

According to sources, the document will most likely be issued in the form of a memorandum of understanding. One of Bloomberg's interlocutors said that it could be signed as early as Sunday during international meetings in Geneva or Evian (France), although Tehran's final consent has not yet been received.

US President Donald Trump also previously said that a peace agreement with Iran could be signed in Europe as early as this weekend.

According to Axios, the text of the memorandum has already been agreed upon, but requires final approval by the parties. According to the draft document, Iran undertakes not to seek to create nuclear weapons and to resolve the issue of enriched uranium reserves. In exchange, the US may consider easing sanctions and restoring economic cooperation.

The document also provides for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping without additional fees and the gradual restoration of traffic volumes to pre-war levels. In response, Washington must lift the blockade of Iranian ports.

According to Bloomberg, the signing of the memorandum will be only the first stage of the process and will open a 60-day round of negotiations on a broader agreement between the United States and Iran.

At the same time, a representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry told the agency that there are no final agreements yet, although the parties have indeed made progress in negotiations to end the conflict.

One of the unresolved issues remains frozen Iranian assets abroad. Tehran demands immediate access to part of the funds, while the United States proposes their gradual release depending on the fulfillment of the terms of a future agreement.
