Kyiv intends to appeal to the Ramstein countries with a request for additional funding

Ukraine intends to request an additional $20 billion in military assistance from its Western allies. This was reported by Reuters and Politico, citing sources in the Ukrainian defense sector.

The request is scheduled to be presented on June 18 at the next meeting of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine (Ramstein), which coordinates arms supplies to Kyiv.

According to Reuters, the allies will be asked to provide between $2 billion and $6 billion each in direct military assistance or loans . The agency's source said that Ukraine expects to use the coming months to strengthen its positions on the battlefield.

“We have a window of opportunity of six to nine months on the battlefield, and it urgently requires accelerating funding,” the source told Reuters.

Strengthening air defense and purchasing drones

According to Politico, additional funds are planned to be used to strengthen air defense, purchase drones, ammunition, electronic warfare equipment and long-range weapons. They also want to use part of the money to place orders at Ukrainian defense enterprises.

In addition, funding could be used to purchase weapons through a NATO mechanism called the Ukraine Priority List of Needs, which allows allies to centrally purchase weapons for Kyiv from American manufacturers.

According to Politico, the issue has already been discussed by Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov with representatives of Norway, Sweden, Germany and Canada.

NATO discusses €70 billion package

Earlier, Politico reported, citing diplomats from the alliance countries, that NATO was discussing the allocation of military support to Ukraine in the amount of 70 billion euros. It is expected that the initiative could be presented at the NATO summit in Ankara in July.

According to the publication, about 30 billion euros can be provided through a two-year loan to Ukraine worth 90 billion euros already agreed by the European Union, and another 40 billion euros - as part of the allies’ bilateral obligations.

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group was created in the spring of 2022 on the initiative of then US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. It includes more than 40 states coordinating the supply of weapons and military equipment to Kyiv.

Against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities, many Ukrainian and Western military experts note the increasing effectiveness of Ukrainian drones, which make it possible to strike Russian logistics, military facilities and industrial infrastructure deep into Russia.
