Moscow schoolchildren began to apply to regional universities more often. - Kommersant found out

According to Kommersant, Moscow schoolchildren are increasingly considering branches of Moscow universities for admission, as well as transferring to regional universities from Moscow.

“People come to us and say that our program is stronger,” says Ekaterina Turilova, vice-rector for educational activities at Kazan Federal University.

Director of the Institute for Educational Development at the Higher School of Economics Irina Abankina says that Moscow schoolchildren with their Unified State Exam scores are trying to enter the regions on the budget:

“For Moscow universities, their results may not be the highest, but for regional universities they often significantly exceed the average admission level and have a positive impact on positions in rankings.”

• In March 2025, Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko proposed to reduce the admission of applicants to universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan, because universities in these cities allegedly increase enrollment in paid places and thus create specialists who are not needed by the labor market.
