The French resort town of Evian-les-Bains is hosting the Group of Seven (G7) summit, which brings together the leaders of the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan. The event is also attended by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and the leaders of the European Union.

Among the main topics of the meeting are the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, the global economy, international cooperation and the development of artificial intelligence. French President Emmanuel Macron previously said that one of the key priorities of the summit would be restoring balance in the global economy against the backdrop of global changes.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen , in turn, emphasized that the leaders will discuss the problem of global imbalances, excess production capacity and export restrictions on strategic resources.

Zelensky offered Putin a meeting on the sidelines of the G7

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that before the summit in France he invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a personal meeting during the forum in the presence of US President Donald Trump and European leaders.

“We conveyed the message that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7 summit, because Trump and Macron will be there, that is, the Europeans plus America. I think this is a very good opportunity for everyone to meet together,” Zelensky said.

According to the RBC-Ukraine source, the proposal was conveyed to the Russian side through intermediaries, diplomats and intelligence channels, but there was no response from Moscow.

Zelensky had previously come up with a similar initiative in an open letter to Putin, published on June 4. The next day, the Russian president said that he saw no reason for such a meeting at the current stage.

Zelensky also said that during a telephone conversation with Donald Trump on June 14, he discussed the possibility of organizing a trilateral meeting of the leaders of Ukraine, Russia and the United States in the United States.

According to the Ukrainian president, the idea of ​​inviting Putin to the G7 summit was also considered together with the United States and France. But, according to Zelensky, the Russian leader “doesn’t want this.”

“We'll see what happens. If Russia refuses this chance, additional pressure will be necessary,” he said.

In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that President Zelensky’s invitation to hold a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the G7 summit was not received by the Russian side through official channels.

European leaders intend to convince Trump to increase pressure on Moscow

According to Bloomberg, Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intend to use the summit to discuss with Trump a new approach to negotiations with Russia .

European leaders believe that the current situation creates more favorable conditions for Ukraine for possible negotiations. AFP and Politico also reported that further military support for Kyiv, including joint production of drones, will be discussed at G7 meetings.

The UK has already announced a new package of sanctions against Russia. The restrictions included Russian banks, enterprises of the military-industrial complex, military personnel and vessels of the so-called shadow fleet.

Donald Trump himself, who arrived at the summit, said that after resolving the crisis around Iran, the United States will again focus on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
