Over the past week, Idel.Realii identified the names of another 300 natives of the Volga region who died in the war in Ukraine. Of these, 82 are residents of Bashkortostan

As of the morning of June 22, at least 56,606 people from the regions of the Volga Federal District (plus the Astrakhan region) had died.

During the period from June 15 to June 21, Idel.Realii identified the names of 300 military personnel from 15 regions of the Volga region who died in the war in Ukraine. Thus, as of the morning of June 22, at least 56,606 people from the regions of the Volga Federal District (plus the Astrakhan region) died.

Number of identified victims per week by region:

• Bashkortostan - 82 people;
• Udmurtia - 57 people;
• Tatarstan - 51 people;
• Chuvashia - 35 people;
• Saratov region - 34 people;
• Mari El - 19 people;
• Perm region - 5 people;
• Ulyanovsk region - 4 people;
• Samara region - 4 people;
• Kirov region - 3 people;
• Astrakhan region - 2 people;
• Nizhny Novgorod region - 1 person;
• Penza region - 1 person;
• Orenburg region - 1 person;
• Mordovia - 1 person.

Bashkortostan still remains the leader in the total number of identified dead: the war claimed the lives of at least 10,318 military personnel from the republic. Next on the list are Tatarstan (9,154 names) and Perm Territory (6,020 names). The smallest established losses among the Volga regions today were suffered by Mari El and Mordovia - 1,415 and 721, respectively.

Journalists from Mediazona, together with the BBC Russian Service and a team of volunteers, as of June 19, identified the names of 227,680 Russian military personnel who died in the war against Ukraine. Bashkortostan remains the leader among all Russian regions in terms of the number of confirmed losses.

• The losses of the Russian Federation during the year of the war with Ukraine exceeded the losses of the USSR and Russia in all wars after World War II combined. Moscow and Kyiv, as a rule, do not publicly disclose losses in the war in Ukraine, talking mainly about the losses of the enemy. Parties to military conflicts tend to exaggerate their successes and downplay their failures. Research by journalists is one of the most important independent estimates of the death toll.
• The Russian Ministry of Defense last reported on losses on the day mobilization began—September 21, 2022. According to the head of the department at that time, Sergei Shoigu , losses amounted to 5,937 people.
• "Idel.Realii" conducts its own count of dead military personnel and volunteers from the Volga region. This list contains only those whose death was somehow recognized by the Russian side, relatives of the victims, or educational or other public institutions. The actual numbers may be significantly higher.
