The developers of the unofficial Telegram client Telega announced that the application will stop working on July 1. They informed users of their decision, stating that they could no longer provide the service in accordance with current requirements.

“We have put a lot of effort into keeping users familiar and secure access to communications and their accounts. But in the Telegram client format, we cannot ensure complete localization and compliance with all current requirements. Including due to external restrictions from technology platforms, including removal from the App Store,” the developers said in a statement .

In April 2026, it became known that the hosting provider Cloudflare recognized two Telega working domains - telega.me and api.telega.info - as potentially spyware. After this, the international certification authority GlobalSign revoked the application's TLS certificate, which was used for a secure HTTPS connection.

After the certificate was revoked, the application disappeared from the App Store . The developers then stated that the reason was external restrictions on the part of technology platforms.

Experts pointed out security risks

Telega was created by the Kazan company Dal. Its founders are entrepreneurs Fanis Sadykov and Alexander Smirnov, who met in 2013 at the Seliger youth forum. In 2017, they created the interactive video platform Movika, which they sold to one of VK's subsidiaries in 2022.

According to research by RKS Global, Telega’s network traffic passed through third-party servers in Kazan. Other experts claimed that the application is capable of intercepting and storing user data , including messages and correspondence history, Vorstka wrote.

Former development team member Dmitry Tarasenko also reported that Telega used the VK infrastructure. According to him, voice calls passed through Odnoklassniki servers, which are also used in the VK Calls services and the MAX messenger.

The developers denied dependence on VK

The use of VK infrastructure has led to speculation about the close connection of the project with the company. However, the creators of Telega stated that the application is independent, and VK services are used exclusively “on standard commercial terms” and without access to user data.

At the same time, experts noted that the source code of the modules responsible for calls, traffic filtering and analytics remains closed. This makes it impossible to independently verify the developers' claims about the security of the application and the lack of access to user data.

At the beginning of the year, Vorstka wrote that the number of Telega downloads had doubled after Telegram restrictions were strengthened in Russia.
