Putin said nothing fundamentally new in his 17-minute speech at the pre-election congress of United Russia, limiting himself to the usual statements that the West is putting pressure on Russia, using Ukraine as a battering ram, that the participants in the war are the “new elite”, and the people are united. He also added that the autumn elections to the State Duma will be fair and competitive.

Contrary to expectations , party chairman Dmitry Medvedev did not make it into the top five of the United Russia list in the elections (the names of these people are printed on the ballot papers). Instead, the party will be led to the elections by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, military correspondent Yevgeny Poddubny, children's ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova and head of the Yunarmiya main headquarters Vladislav Golovin. Medvedev himself read their names from the stage.
