In addition to “The Fly,” Canadian David Cronenberg directed “Videodrome” and “Naked Lunch” based on the prose of William Burroughs. Recently "Car Crash" was released, as well as a series of commercials for Nike. Distinguished by his enviable efficiency, until the second half of the eighties, Cronenberg directed a lot of films for Canadian and American television - mainly cheap (in a commercial sense) thrillers and horror films. After The Fly, real fame came to Cronenberg - the film was extremely popular.

The Fly is a remake of the 1958 thriller of the same name directed by Kurt Neumann. Both films are about an extremely talented scientist who discovered the possibility of teleportation and made a mistake in the process of experimenting on himself: a fly ended up in the teleportation machine. As a result, the scientist's genes mixed with the genes of the insect, and he began to gradually turn into an ordinary house fly, known to science as musca domestica. Both films were naturally followed by sequels. In Neumann's film, the poor scientist's wife gives birth to a fat maggot at the end (or she thinks so - it doesn't matter). Cronenberg’s heroine, although not his wife, is at least pregnant. Moreover, the insect makes every effort to ensure that she certainly gives birth. The main difference between the two films is that in the 1986 film, the fly spends more time philosophizing and thinking out loud about his marginal essence.

In Cronenberg's film, the not-so-pretty but quite funny process of successively transforming a person into a fly has three stages. During the first, a person acquires strength and energy previously unknown to him. He is extremely sexy, aggressive, athletic and eats all the time. The first hairs appear from scratches on the skin - what insects call cuticle outgrowths. The first stage is an obvious metaphor for stimulant drugs, as the fly itself will notice. During the second stage, a serious metamorphosis of the face begins, and vestigial parts of the body, such as teeth, nails, fingers and ears, gradually begin to fall off. (By the way, Cronenberg was wrong about the ears - science has proven that insects have excellent hearing.) The first abilities for extraintestinal digestion, characteristic of most insects, appear, during which the fly spews gastric juice onto the food, and then absorbs the resulting liquid. It begins to give off an unpleasant odor - Cronenberg loosely suggested that a large fly would certainly smell. During the second stage, the fly talks aloud about reincarnation, rebirth, turning into some new and therefore always attractive state - in other words, the fly is still in a state of exaltation, enthusiastically thinking about the incident that happened to it. In this second stage, one can easily guess the theory of symbiotic evolution, according to which the constant contact coexistence of two or more organic matters in a variety of combinations can endow them with a noticeably greater life potential. The second stage imperceptibly passes into the third: the fly begins to move along the walls. She is frankly intolerant of people. Her face is disgusting.

From time to time she jerks her head. The neck disappears so that nothing interferes with the formation of the cephalothorax. In the end, from the fly - still a very disfigured person - a fly hatches, a creature in which there is no longer anything human. There was no enthusiasm - the fly was in extreme distress. She says (and how can she still say this?!): “I am an insect who, in a joyful dream, dreamed that it was a man. But the dream ended, and I woke up - an ordinary insect." The third stage confirms Cronenberg’s confidence in the correctness of the well-known genetic and at the same time philosophical theory, according to which in the process of merging two forms of life, the more primitive one always wins. If we consider the whole process as a whole, then, if desired, we can see in it one global metaphor - anything, from AIDS to aging. With its complaints and thoughts out loud, the fly only provokes the viewer to search for cultural answers. In addition, unlike the pigeon, she never learned to fly.
