Since 1999, the Italian Committee on New Technologies, Energy and Environmental Protection (ENEA) has been conducting experiments in the sugar desert on the accumulation of solar energy with special organic batteries. The concave mirrors focus the sun's rays on the surface of metal pipes, along which organic fertilizers such as Guano and Chilean nitrate flow. Heat causes a chemical reaction in them, leading to an increase in temperature to 600 degrees, which can serve for electricity. It will then be transferred to other countries through the underground cable. In the project, which is currently being implemented, there will be two such cables: one (for 2000 megavatts) will go to Italy, and the second (3000 megavatts) will connect sugar and Spain. Calculations show that the cost of energy received in this way will be only 5 euro centers per kilowatt: it is as much as electricity obtained in the usual way.
