Cinema according to conscience
Vasily Sigarev directed the New Year's comedy “Country of OZ” - uncontrollable, merciless and very funny.
She will go to the movies with a loud squeak (there is a lot of swearing in her). Afisha asked the author to formulate his attitude towards laughter, censorship and the rental system.
WITH THE POWER OF WEEKS ZYA Conscience You can’t do what you don’t know in the cinema. If you grew up in an intelligent Moscow family, then tell us about it, don’t talk about the provinces, how bad and dark everything is there. It won’t be “once upon a time in the province,” but “once upon a time in my crazy head.” This is where the viewer’s attitude towards such films comes from. And from it grows distrust of the entire industry.
Laughter Comedy is a very accessible genre for the viewer. And when you also give the viewer the opportunity to step back and look at your neighbor, he actively comes forward to meet you halfway. The viewer loves it when he is a hero, and the neighbor is a schmuck. If the author understands this, he will not be indignant: “Why is he laughing? Laugh at yourself!” For me, comedy is a way to laugh at myself. There was so much humor in life that it would be a pity not to take advantage of it. Even when I was hit by a train as a student, I managed to do it comically: we sat with one house, who hit his head on the rail, for several hours in the emergency room of the Nizhny Negatil station and waited for at least one more victim to appear, because the ambulance refused to go for two. Ridiculing and healthy laughter are two different things. Ridicule implies belligerence. But war, in my opinion, will not solve anything.
Mat I don’t re-sound my films, we always record live sound on set. When I beeped “The Land of OZ”, I realized that nothing had essentially changed - now we are beeping so actively that the comic effect is only intensifying, and most importantly, it is a testament to the times. It is clear from our film that there is censorship in the country. I understand that this whole law is husk, the result of Stanislav Govorukhin’s own ambitions, who was offended by the fact that he dropped out of the film process. And as a result, he now has his own film based on Dovlatov.
Money Government financing needs to be reconsidered. Now the country is repurposing budgets for defense and cops, cutting spending on culture, medicine and education, so that very little money is now given for debuts. In general, the crisis is a transitory phenomenon, but in Russian cinema the financial crisis is a constant. Because the system does not oblige you to make high-quality films: according to the law, if a person took money from Goskino, his obligation is to hand over the film on film to the Gosfilmofond. All. Then he is no longer responsible for anything. The producers receive money, and then many films remain on the shelves of the White Pillars, and you and I will never see them, and there’s no need. Not everyone does this, but few people have the conscience and strength to put creative ambitions above money. This system is inherently flawed; 10% of producers will work normally in it.
BUT WEEKS ZY If the state needs to figure out how to spend money, it would be better to create some kind of centralized system for helping film distribution. I'm not an effective manager, I don't know for sure. But now nothing is working - and this is not a problem that can be solved by quotas in cinemas. I think people should shoot with their own. Or for loans that the same Cinema Fund can give. But this must be refundable money - so that the one who withdraws feels responsible.
Loyalty All laws - including the law on swearing and rental certificates - are written in such a way that they can be circumvented. In general, you can’t be friends with the authorities—the authorities should mind their own business, and the director should do his own. But cooperation is possible. If they turn to me, for example, for help in organizing some kind of expert council, I will be all for it. When you have the opportunity to help establish contact between the authorities and the professional community, you need to take advantage of this chance. But I don’t see this chance now.
