Rolan Bart saw in him an ideal artist, and his directorial work was analyzed by Umberto Eco. In his films, Alain Delon, Jack Nicholson, Jeanne Moro, Jane Birkin and Marcello Mastroianni starred, and Pink Floyd wrote soundtracks. He was closely friends with Andrei Tarkovsky, and the Lim Wim Wenders helped to remove the unmeants and partially paralyzed master. He died on the same day with Ingmar Bergman.
