At the beginning of the play, Macbeth's friend Banquo receives another prophecy from the witches: he himself will not rule Scotland, but his descendants will. The Stuarts who ruled at the time the play was written were considered precisely the descendants of Banquo. Only forty years would pass and one of Banquo's descendants, Charles I Stuart, would turn into Macbeth: his tyrannical policies would provoke the Civil War and Revolution in England, and he, like Macbeth, would be beheaded.
