Transmutation of an incomprehensible Christianity
From the book “Canudus” by Euclides da Cunha At the very end of the 19th century, the north of the Brazilian province of Bahia turned into a very colorful place, inhabited by all sorts of outcasts: runaway criminals, former slaves, landless peasants, followers of quasi-religious cults. In 1896 they launched an uprising that became known in history as the War of Canudus.
