1940 Occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina
75 years ago, on June 28, 1940, Soviet troops entered the territory of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. Two days earlier, People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs Molotov presented an ultimatum to the Romanian ambassador in Moscow demanding that these territories be immediately handed over to the Soviet Union. Bessarabia was supposed to go to the USSR according to the secret protocol to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, but nothing was said about Bukovina.
