1995 Hijacking of a Russian plane in Kandahar
20 years ago, on August 3, 1995, the Afghan Taliban forced an Il-76 aircraft of the Kazan company Aerostan to land in the Kandahar region, making a commercial flight with a cargo of small arms ammunition for the Northern Alliance fighting the Taliban. Seven crew members, led by commander Vladimir Sharpatov, were taken hostage. After 378 days of captivity, the crew managed to escape.
