1926 Murder of Symon Petlyura
90 years ago, on May 25, 1926, the former chairman of the Directory of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the chief ataman of the Ukrainian army Simon Vasilyevich Petlyura was killed in Paris. The murderer, Samuil Schwartzbard, avenged the Jewish pogroms in Ukraine committed by the Petliurists. At the trial, Petliura's family's lawyers testified that in reality Petliura fought against the pogroms and ordered the execution of the rioters. However, Schwarzbard was acquitted by a Parisian jury.
