1991 Beginning of the collapse of Yugoslavia
25 years ago, on June 25, 1991, Slovenia and Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia. An attempt by the Serbian army to regain control over Slovenia ended on July 7 with the capture of more than 5,000 Serbian troops, the de facto recognition of Slovenia's independence by Belgrade, and the withdrawal of Yugoslav troops from there. In Croatia, the war took on a fierce character and continued intermittently until May 1995.
