1961. The death of Daga Hammarscheld
Photo: daghammarskjold.se 55 years ago, on September 18, 1961, in a plane crash near Ndola (current Zambia), the General Secretary of the United Nations, the Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarscheld, died. Of the 16 people on board, no one survived. Hammarscheld was heading for negotiations with the Katanga separatists, trying to stop the civil war in the Congo. According to the official version, the disaster occurred due to the pilot's error.
