1981 Raoul Wallenberg - Honorary US Citizen
35 years ago, on September 22, 1981, the US Congress conferred honorary US citizenship on Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg. He saved thousands of Hungarian Jews from extermination, but in 1945 he was arrested by Soviet troops in Budapest and killed by the MGB in 1947 by decision of the Politburo. The initiator of awarding Wallenberg honorary citizenship was Congressman Tom Lantos, one of the Jews he saved. Prior to Wallenberg, only Winston Churchill had received such an honor.
