1996 Execution of Najibullah
Twenty years ago, on September 27, 1996, during the capture of Kabul by the Taliban, former Afghan President Mohammad Najibullah, who had been hiding in the premises of the UN mission since 1992, was killed. Najibullah was tortured and shot dead. The dead body was tied to a jeep and dragged two kilometers to the presidential palace of Arg. Then the mutilated bodies of Najibullah and his brother Shahpur Ahmadzai were hung on a steel wire at the gates of the palace.
