1917 Demonstrations and strikes in Petrograd
One hundred years ago, on March 9, 1917, over 200,000 workers went on strike in Petrograd. They were joined by students of the university and the Higher Women's (Bestuzhev) Courses. Since the police were unable to disperse the mass demonstrations, troops were sent to help them. However, they behaved passively, and the Cossacks flatly refused to disperse the demonstrators.
