1847 The defeat of the Cyril and Methodius Society
170 years ago, on April 8, 1847, poet Taras Shevchenko and historian Nikolai Kostomarov were arrested in Kyiv. Their "crime" was belonging to the Cyril and Methodius Society, which aimed to create a Union of Slavic Republics with democratic institutions. Shevchenko was given to the soldiers, and Kostomarov was exiled to Saratov.
