1992 Overthrow of Najibullah in Afghanistan
25 years ago, on April 16, 1992, the Uzbek militias of General Abdul-Rashid Dostum overthrew the communist president of Afghanistan, Mohammed Najibullah. Najibullah's attempt to escape from Kabul by plane failed, and he, along with his inner circle, was forced to take refuge in the UN mission. Power was transferred to the Mujahideen headed by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Burhanuddin Rabbani and Ahmad Shah Massoud.
