1942 Soviet counteroffensive at Stalingrad
75 years ago, on November 19, 1942, the counter-offensive of the Soviet troops near Stalingrad began, which led to the encirclement and liquidation of the 250,000-strong German-Romanian group in Stalingrad. One of the German officers who found themselves in the Stalingrad "cauldron" wrote in his diary: "None of us will return to Germany unless a miracle happens. Time has gone over to the Russians." Indeed, out of more than 90,000 prisoners of Stalingrad, only 6,000 returned to Germany.
