1978 Escape of Arkady Shevchenko
Forty years ago, on April 5, 1978, Soviet diplomat Arkady Shevchenko, who worked at the UN as Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Council Affairs, asked for political asylum in the United States. Previously, he was a CIA agent for three years. Shevchenko was provoked to escape by a sudden call to Moscow, where he was suspected of espionage.
