1984 Indian Army attack on Amritsar Golden Temple
35 years ago, on June 5, 1984, the Indian army launched Operation Blue Star against Sikh extremists who had settled in the Golden Temple of Amritsar. The temple has been inhabited since 1982 by Jarnail Singh Bindrawal, the spiritual leader of the Damdami Taksal, a Sikh religious group calling for a return to the "original roots" of Sikhism. The Indian authorities suspected this group of terrorism.
